Adventure is for everyone! Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned backpacker, we welcome adults 18 and older. Each expedition is limited to just eight participants to keep the experience personal. We review applications to ensure everyone is a good fit for the trip, and applicants who aren't selected will be placed on our waitlist.

That's exactly why we created RidgeKin! We believe some of the best friendships start with a shared adventure. We host info sessions and occasional pre-trip meetups so you can get to know your fellow adventurers before hitting the trail.
Come solo, leave with stories and new friends!
-
Not at all! Introducing people to the outdoors is one of our favorite parts of what we do. We'll help you understand your equipment, prepare for the trail, and develop practical backpacking skills along the way.
All we ask is that you come with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
-
Backpacking is a strenuous activity, especially with a loaded pack! At minimum, you should be capable of completing an eight-mile hike, with plenty of breaks along the way.
Some expeditions are more challenging than others, so we'll discuss the terrain, elevation, and physical expectations before departure.
-
First off, coffee's on us!
Our info sessions are casual get-togethers where you'll meet the RidgeKin team, connect with potential adventure companions and returning participants, and hear about upcoming trips.
We'll cover the route, equipment, preparation, pricing, and any questions you might have. No pressure, just good conversation and a little excitement for what's ahead.
-
It's easy! Click "Apply for an Expedition" or reach out through our Contact page.
We'll get to know you, answer your questions, and walk you through the application process. Once accepted, we'll provide the details needed to secure your spot.
-
We handle the route planning, navigation, campsite logistics, group safety preparations, and outdoor instruction so you can focus on enjoying the adventure.
Don't own backpacking equipment? No problem! Rental options include backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, trekking poles, headlamps, water purification equipment, Jetboil stoves, and fuel.
Equipment may be individually assigned or shared among the group. Renting is completely optional, and we encourage you to use what you already own or share appropriate equipment to save money.
We'll help you figure out exactly what you need!
-
Meals are not included in the expedition. We recommend planning for three meals per day, along with plenty of snacks to keep your energy up on the trail.
Lightweight backpacking meals and MRE-style options can be purchased online or at outdoor retailers, often for around $12 per meal.
We'll provide guidance on meal planning so you know exactly what to bring.
-
One of our expedition leaders will be traveling in a trail vehicle, and participants can ride along when seats are available.
Prefer to drive yourself? That's perfectly fine too! We'll coordinate transportation and meeting arrangements before departure.
-
Most RidgeKin adventures involve two days of hiking and two nights camping, with some expeditions extending to three days.
We explore beautiful mountain destinations, selecting routes that offer breathtaking scenery, rewarding challenges, and memorable experiences.
-
Out in the mountains, of course!
We'll be camping outdoors surrounded by nature. Tent sharing is completely optional. If you make a friend and want to split the weight of a tent, that's a great way to make your pack a little lighter.
Otherwise, you're welcome to have your own space.
-
Welcome to the wilderness!
Most backcountry campsites don't have traditional bathrooms or showers. We'll explain how to manage personal hygiene, use the bathroom responsibly outdoors, and follow Leave No Trace practices.
Don't worry, we'll make sure you know what to expect before the trip.
-
Your safety is a priority. Our group carries first-aid supplies and a Garmin inReach satellite communication device with emergency SOS capabilities.
If someone becomes injured or unable to continue, we'll assess the situation and determine the safest next steps, including requesting emergency assistance when necessary.
Remember, we're exploring remote wilderness areas, where rescue may take time.
-
A little unpredictability is part of the adventure, but we take preparation seriously!
We practice proper food storage, wildlife awareness, and appropriate precautions, including bear spray when suitable and permitted.
As for weather, a rainy forecast doesn't necessarily mean a canceled trip! We prepare for changing mountain conditions and continue when it's safe to do so.
If severe weather or other hazards make an expedition unsafe, we'll offer rescheduling or a full refund.
-
We understand that life happens! Our expeditions require significant preparation and coordination, so cancellations made at least one month before departure qualify for a full refund.
If something unexpected comes up closer to your trip, give us a call. We're happy to discuss your circumstances and explore available options.
